Understanding Stress and How It Affects Us

Stress can show up in different ways both physically and emotionally and for women over 40 the effects can be significant. The hormonal changes that are linked to perimenopause and menopause can lead to increased anxiety. Studies have shown that approximately 75% of women will experience mood swings during these phases.

This heightened level of stress can cause sleepless nights, irritability, and even physical issues like headaches or digestive issues. I have had to deal with the majority of these myself so you can get through this!. Unfortunately this can also put a strain on your relationships as when work, family, and personal demands start to pile up, taking time for yourself feels almost impossible. Recognising the effects of stress is the first step in being able to manage it effectively.

The Importance of Self Care

Self care isn’t just a trendy term it's crucial for your mental and emotional health. Taking deliberate time out for yourself helps you to recharge your batteries. Women like us over 40 are often trying to balance multiple roles which makes self care even more essential, to counteract those daily stressors.

However, you may feel like this sounds like another task on an already stacked to do list, It isnt trust me, even incorporating just 15 minutes a day for the activities you love, like reading a book, doing a bit of potting in the garden, or enjoying a cup of herbal tea will have an impact.

Stress Reliever Tip 1: Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness and meditation are proven powerful tools for tackling stress. These practices help you to relax by quieting your mind and easing anxiety. Research indicates that just 10 minutes of daily meditation can decrease anxiety levels.

If your unsure about how to begin, find a quiet spot, close your eyes, and focus on your breathing. If your mind starts , to wander as it will, gently redirect it back to your breathing. There are various apps available, such as Headspace and Calm, that can guide you and help you to make daily meditation part of your routine.

Stress Reliever Tip 2: Physical Activity

Physical activity is one of the most effective scientifically proven stress busters. Exercise releases endorphins which are your body's natural mood enhancers. Research shows that people who engage in regular physical activity report a significant reduction in stress levels.

So find activities you enjoy and will actually stick to. Whether it’s dancing, swimming, or hiking, aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise on most days. Even just going for a walk will help. Not only does this reduce stress but it also boosts energy and mood and improves your sleep quality.

Stress Reliever Tip 3: Connect with Others

Human connection is esential for emotional health. As our responsibilities increase, many people have to prioritize work, family and other responsibilities often over regular interactions with friends and family. But, its important to stay connected so you could schedule weekly catch ups, whether iit'sa phone call, a coffee outing, or taking an exercise class together. Nurturing your relationships provides support that can help you manage stress more effectively. You could also consider joining clubs or groups that focus on your hobbies or interests.

Finding Balance

Achieving balance is both a struggle and a continuous journey, especially as we age. Stress is unfortunately an inevitable part of life, but it does not have to overpower you. By adopting these stress relief strategies and by prioritising your well being, you can achieve a more balanced life.

Always remember that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Seek professional assistance if necessary or you feel as though you cannot cope and reach out to your support network. Your well being should be your top priority, I know its been said many times before but the truth is you cannot pour from an empty cup!
